ESG fundamentals

ESG

Also known as: Environmental, social and governance

ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. It is a framework for assessing how a company manages its environmental impact, its relationships with workers, communities and suppliers, and the way it is run and controlled. Investors, lenders and buyers use ESG data to judge risk and long-term resilience.

At LONGi. LONGi reports its ESG performance annually in a Sustainability Report that covers the whole group.

Double materiality

Double materiality is a reporting principle under which a company assesses both how sustainability issues affect its own finances (financial materiality) and how the company's activities affect people and the environment (impact materiality). A topic is reportable if it is material from either perspective. It is the basis of the EU's CSRD.

At LONGi. LONGi's 2024 double-materiality analysis prioritised climate change response, product quality and sustainable supply chain development.

Stakeholder engagement

Stakeholder engagement is the practice of consulting the people and groups affected by or affecting a company, such as employees, customers, suppliers, investors, regulators and communities, and using their input in strategy and reporting. It underpins materiality assessments and grievance processes.

Greenwashing

Greenwashing is the practice of making environmental claims that are misleading, unsubstantiated or exaggerated. Regulators in the EU and elsewhere increasingly require environmental claims to be specific, evidenced and independently verifiable, for example by citing the figure, the standard and the year.

At LONGi. LONGi's compliance guidance says a defensible environmental claim cites the figure, the standard and the year, and that factory results and product claims are kept separate.

ESG rating

An ESG rating is a score or grade from an independent provider that assesses a company's exposure to, and management of, environmental, social and governance risks. Common providers include EcoVadis, MSCI, S&P Global, CDP and FTSE Russell. Methodologies differ, so ratings from different providers are not directly comparable.

At LONGi. LONGi is assessed by EcoVadis, MSCI, S&P Global, CDP and FTSE Russell.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Also known as: GHG emissions, CO2e, carbon dioxide equivalent

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are releases of gases, mainly carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, that trap heat in the atmosphere. Companies measure them in tonnes of CO2-equivalent (tCO2e) and report them by scope under the GHG Protocol.

Scope 2 emissions

Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating or cooling that a company consumes. They can be reported using a location-based or a market-based method, the latter reflecting renewable electricity purchases.

At LONGi. LONGi reports that 47.5% of the electricity it consumed in 2024 was renewable, with RE100 targets of 70% by 2027 and 100% by 2028.

Scope 3 emissions

Scope 3 emissions are all other indirect greenhouse gas emissions in a company's value chain, both upstream (purchased materials, transport) and downstream (use and end-of-life of products). They are usually the largest part of a footprint and the hardest to measure.

At LONGi. LONGi works to reduce Scope 3 by asking key Tier-1 suppliers to set carbon-reduction targets and obtain ISO 14001 certification.

Product carbon footprint

Also known as: PCF, product carbon footprint declaration

A product carbon footprint (PCF) is the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product over a defined part of its life cycle, calculated under a method such as ISO 14067. A cradle-to-gate PCF covers raw materials through to the factory gate.

At LONGi. LONGi reports 53 carbon footprint certifications for wafers, modules and hydrogen products in 2024, across French, Korean and international EPD schemes. For a 665 Wp back contact module, its EPD gives a product-stage total of 214 kg CO2e.

Embodied carbon

Embodied carbon is the greenhouse gas emissions released in making a product, including raw material extraction, manufacturing and transport, before it is used. For solar modules it is the upfront emissions that are repaid through the electricity the module generates over its life.

At LONGi. In LONGi's EPD for a 665 Wp back contact module, cells account for 59.3% of the product-stage footprint, glass for 15.8% and the aluminium frame for 14.6%.

Carbon neutrality

Carbon neutrality means balancing the greenhouse gas emissions an entity causes with an equivalent amount removed or offset, so that net emissions are zero. Claims should state their scope and method, because offsetting is not the same as eliminating emissions.

At LONGi. LONGi makes no carbon-neutrality claim for its modules. The Jiaxing factory is certified as a zero-carbon factory under ISO 14068, relying on on-site solar, renewable electricity certificates and verified carbon credits.

Net zero

Also known as: Net-zero emissions

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions as close to zero as possible, in line with climate science, and neutralising only the small residual with permanent carbon removals. It differs from carbon neutrality, which can rely on offsets without deep cuts.

Renewable energy certificate

Also known as: REC, guarantee of origin, I-REC

A renewable energy certificate (REC) is a tradable instrument representing one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a renewable source. Buying RECs lets a company claim the renewable attributes of that generation in market-based Scope 2 reporting.

At LONGi. LONGi's zero-carbon factory status relies in part on renewable electricity certificates.

Related terms:RE100 · Scope 2 emissions · Carbon offset

Carbon offset

Also known as: Carbon credit

A carbon offset, or carbon credit, represents one tonne of CO2e avoided or removed elsewhere and is bought to compensate for a company's own emissions. Offsets do not reduce a company's own footprint, so credible climate claims separate real reductions from offsetting.

At LONGi. LONGi's Jiaxing zero-carbon factory status uses verified carbon credits for the small remainder of emissions.
