Why it matters

The sea puts every module component to the test

Offshore PV systems are exposed to salt-laden air, water, humidity and changing mechanical forces. Corrosion can affect aluminium frames and electrical connections. Moisture ingress can undermine insulation performance, while strong winds and repeated loads increase demands on module construction. In locations where access is difficult, repairs and replacements can also carry significant operational costs.

Sea-Shield addresses these risks through a series of protective design measures covering the module's exposed and internal components.

Marine protection built into every critical component

Sea-Shield uses a coordinated protective design for the frame, front glass, electrical connections and encapsulation. Each component is intended to resist a different source of degradation encountered in marine PV applications.

Dual-POE encapsulation

Sea-Shield uses dual-POE encapsulation on both sides of the solar cells to reduce moisture penetration and protect the internal electrical structure. The material's high electrical resistivity also helps limit potential-induced degradation (PID), supporting reliable energy generation in humid marine environments.

Marine-resistant glass

Sea-Shield features specially developed corrosion-resistant glass with a dense protective barrier designed to withstand prolonged saltwater exposure. The protective surface helps limit glass corrosion and preserve light transmission in demanding marine environments.

In LONGi's comparative testing

Sea-Shield glass maintained approximately 2% higher light transmittance than conventional glass during exposure to a 5% sodium chloride solution at 35°C.

Corrosion-resistant aluminium frame

Sea-Shield features a corrosion-resistant aluminium frame with a protective oxide layer approximately 50% thicker than that of a conventional frame. The reinforced surface protection helps reduce corrosion caused by salt spray, supporting long-term frame durability in marine environments.

The Sea-Shield frame showed no visible surface abnormalities after 60 days of salt mist exposure, while the conventional frame exhibited substantial surface corrosion. The Sea-Shield frame also passed a separate 192-hour CASS corrosion test.

Enhanced junction box and connector sealing

Sea-Shield features an enhanced sealing system for its junction box and connectors, including silicone-rubber O-rings and additional waterproof and dustproof stoppers. These protective elements help prevent seawater ingress and reduce corrosion risks at sensitive electrical connections.

Maximum wind speed in the reported front-side wind tunnel test

Strong winds and repeated mechanical stresses place exceptional demands on offshore PV installations. Sea-Shield has undergone static load, dynamic load and wind tunnel testing to assess its mechanical resilience under demanding conditions.

Lower BOS costs and higher projected returns for offshore PV

Offshore PV installations face substantial infrastructure and maintenance costs. Sea-Shield's higher module output can reduce the number of modules and supporting components required and its marine-specific protection is designed to reduce the risk of corrosion-related failures. Both factors can contribute to improved project economics over the system's operating life.

Lower infrastructure and installation requirements

In a modelled 100 MW offshore installation in Yantai, Shandong, LONGi compared 670 W Sea-Shield modules against 630 W TOPCon modules. The model estimates approximately 8,000 fewer modules and a reduction in the sea area required for the installation. Combined savings in balance-of-system infrastructure, sea-area costs and operation and maintenance are estimated at 3.05 US cents/W under the model's assumptions.

Higher returns in the modelled offshore scenario

In the same Yantai scenario, LONGi calculates a levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) of US$0.0377/kWh for Sea-Shield compared with US$0.0391/kWh for TOPCon, a 3.58% reduction. The modelled internal rate of return (IRR) increases by 1.2 percentage points to 7.80%, compared with 6.60% for the TOPCon reference.
